  1. Once the tree is felled, it is timber. Once down, the tree is immediately cut into planks, logs, beams and is transported to the timber supplier such as ITS!
  2. Trees generally need about thirty years to reach full growth! The best trees selected for timber are big, high and mature. The bigger the tree the higher the yield. 
  3. Hardwood and softwood are the two categories in the timber world. It refers to the type of tree the wood comes from! Hardwood comes from deciduous trees that lose their leaves in winter. These are trees like oak, maple or cherry trees. Softwood comes from evergreens which are coniferous trees full of needles.
  4. Timber is a precious resource that is duly protected. In 2010 the European Parliament placed a set of obligations for timber suppliers selling timber on the European market.
  5. Timber is the most sustainable of all building materials. It is harvested in such a way that it isn’t depleted or permanently damaged. Trees grow naturally which means no energy or other raw material input is needed to create this resource.
  6. The most popular hardwood option is by FAR… Oak! The most popular softwood is Pine which is known as the more affordable option. Isn’t that an interesting top timber fact?
  7. A timber building can last just as long as a brick building. This might sound surprising but it performs better than brick especially in locations that are susceptible to strong winds and earthquakes.
  8. Timber homes tend to be much more energy efficient. Wood is a natural source of energy that is capable of storing heat and is a good insulator due to space in between its cells.
