With so many different pallets available in Northern Ireland, it is important to select the right pallets for your business or job. Ensuring you have the right pallet not only saves you money, but it helps maximise and protect your shipments. Here at Integrated Timber Solutions, we have developed a quick guide with all the information you need in one handy place.

STRINGER PALLETS VS BLOCK PALLETS

Although there are many different sizes and configurations, all pallets in Northern Ireland generally fall into either stringer pallets or block pallets.

A stringer pallet (also known as a 2-way pallet) is made up of three or more parallel pieces of timber (called stringers) that make up the frame. The top deck boards are then attached on top to create the familiar wooden pallet structure.

Block Pallets (also known as 4-way pallets) are typically stronger than stringer pallets. They are made of both parallel and perpendicular pieces of timber to better facilitate handling.

As more timber is needed to construct block pallets, this means they are more durable than stringers. However, this does mean they are more costly.

NORTHERN IRELAND PALLET SIZES

When looking at Northern Ireland pallet measurements, it is important to know that the first number is the length of the stringer and the second is the length of the deck board.

It is important that pallets can fit through doors, stack and fit in racks as well as being accessible to forklifts and pallet jacks, but it may come as a surprise that there is a range of standard sizes to choose from.

Thankfully, the International Standards Organisation has tried to make the process more efficient by defining 6 pallet measurements for sending goods across continents.

  • 800 × 1200 mm for use in Europe
  • 1000 × 1200 mm for use in Europe, Asia
  • 1067 × 1067 mm for use in North America, Europe, Asia
  • 1100 × 1100 mm for use in Asia
  • 1165 × 1165 mm for use in Australia
  • 1219 × 1016 mm for use in North America

LOAD CAPACITIES

Finally, it is important to pick the right pallet that can hold the weight of the goods you are shipping. Pallet load capacity is the maximum amount of weight a pallet is designed to carry. The weight of the goods you wish to transport will have an effect on the range of pallets that are available to you.

Stringer pallets can hold a maximum of 2500lbs whereas block pallets are able to hold more than double this, a maximum of  5500lbs.
