It is well known that there are millions of pallets in circulation across Northern Ireland and the globe. They are an essential part of the transportation of goods across the world. Due to their importance and frequent use, there is an endless cycle of new pallets replacing the old, worn out pallets. But just because they have served their original purpose, doesn’t mean they can’t be turned into something new. Rather than disposing of the pallets in a landfill, there are endless opportunities when it comes to upcycling old pallets. From sun loungers to bed frames, we thought we would share some of our favourite upcycling projects for you to try at home! The best bit is, these projects are brilliant for the environment!

Garden Furniture from your Northern Ireland pallets

Creating garden furniture out of used pallets is probably the most common upcycling project. I would be surprised if you have never seen pallets used as garden furniture before, it seems to be everywhere! This project popped up many times during the first lockdown as it allowed people to fill their time with something to do as well as giving their garden a much needed refresh.

There are many types of garden furniture you can make with your pallets in Northern Ireland. Tables, sun loungers, benches and even a large outdoor sofa if you have enough pallets! With ISPM 15 heat treated pallets, there is no need to worry about pests or infections within the pallets, all they need is a fresh lick of paint.

Shelving

Repurposing your old pallets doesn’t always mean making chairs or tables for your garden. One of the coolest projects you can do is creating shelving for your walls. Again, the possibilities are endless, you can create a place to hand your tools, a spice rack or even a wine rack!

Compost Bin

If you are looking to become more environmentally friendly, then why not upcycle your old pallets into a compost bin. This is a very easy project, all you need is screws, hinges and corner brackets!

Recycling food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients, and mitigating the impact of droughts. Mixed with the repurposed pallet compost bin, you will be an eco warrior in no time!

Vegetable Planters

Finally, taking a more self sustainable approach. One of the best uses of your old pallets is to transform them into a vegetable planter box. Something I’ve always wanted to do personally, I finally stepped up and attempted it and it turned out great! The only downside is I’m not great at growing the vegetables I want to (all my chilli plants died!).
