So, What exactly is ISPM 15?
ISPM 15 stands for International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No.15 and is the industry standard regarding wooden pallets. They are a set of regulations that state pallets must be heat-treated to the core for 30 minutes at 56 degrees Celsius or be fumigated with Methyl Bromide prior to use. Only then may the quality treatment mark be applied. This proves that the wood has been heat-treated appropriately and is free of pest infestations. This packaging is mandatory for wooden pallets and other products across Europe.
What does the Heat Treatment process involve?
In order for the heat treatment process to be effective, it must be carried out correctly. The wood that is used must first be debarked, because only the core is required for the production of pallets. The oil heat treatment process involves heating of wood in vegetable oil (sunflower, rape seed oil, or linseed oil). In a closed process vessel, wood is immersed in hot oil and heated at temperatures between 180 and 220°C. This ensures good durability at acceptable strength reduction. The goal of heat treatment is to eliminate any living organisms in the wood, to ensure pests and diseases are not introduced to other countries during shipping.
Why are ISPM 15 Pallets so important for Northern Ireland exporters?
Numerous countries around the world were becoming concerned about the global spread of timber-based diseases and pests. As a result, ISPM 15 was developed to prevent any further spread of timber based pests or diseases. These pests or diseases could negatively affect another country’s plants or ecosystems. It provides guidelines for the elimination of all living wood organisms that could be harmful to animals and vegetation. By having this standard of packaging, pallets can be sent internationally without any restrictions! Not just mandatory in Europe, many countries across the world implement the ISPM 15 import regulations. This means it is an essential requirement for all Northern Ireland exporters, who are using timber pallets or products.
