What is timber?

Timber is wood prepared for use in building and carpentry. It is a type of wood which has been processed into beams and planks. This is also known as “lumber” in Canada and the US. Timber is always in demand as it finds its use for making building material, furniture, and various other purposes.

Why is it useful?

Timber is useful in many ways, let’s have a look at what it is used for:

  • Fuel: This is its primary usage as approximately 40% of timber used in forests around the world is utilised as fuel. It changes depending on the availability of coal in different parts.
  • Construction: This is a vital usage as it is needed for building bridges and parts of houses. Since the population is growing, more construction is needed, therefore it has been used widely to create furniture and crates etc.
  • Sawn Wood: This is when wood is used for intense construction and heavy duty projects such as railway sleepers, construction piers etc
  • Plywood and Veneers: Timber is created into a plank; wood that is cut into thin sheets and glued together to form plywood. These are used for doors and furniture and valuable sheets are known as mahogany, ebony, oak and walnut.
  • Fibreboards: This is common in the use of internal constructions for ceilings or linings etc and are made from sawdust, pulp and other waste materials.
  • Pulp and Paper: Wood contains cellulose and lignin which is used in pulping and extracting cellulose from paper.
  • Synthetic Textiles: Wood can be processed to separate out rayon filaments that can be used to produce ‘artificial silk’. They can be cut into staple lengths. They will also be spun, dyed, woven and finished like artificial silk. The leading rayon producers are Japan, USA, and other European countries like Italy.
